Piper Wolfe
TYPEFACE OF CHOICE
Piper's assignment was to choose a typeface, and visually interpret its history, uses, or functionality. The font Johnston was chosen, because it is the typeface of the London Underground. From the London Underground, the colors blue and red were integrated into the design and theme. Piper had insight surrounding this typeface due to her previous adventures in London's public transit system. The hectic nature of the London Underground inspired this aesthetically chaotic design. This poster was crafted using Adobe Photoshop and Procreate software.
Illustrating poetry
Piper's assignment was to choose from an assortment of student-written spoken word poems, and articulate a method of displaying the author's words. This poem, entitled "Honey," by Barton College student Kaitlyn Dawson tells a story of heartbreak and unsettling realizations. While being sure to include the entire literary piece, Piper chose to dramaticize certain lines of the poem. The last line was hand scripted and inserted. All of the graphics on this poster were designed by hand. The sinking hand in the lower third represents the feeling of hopelessness portrayed by the author. This collaboration was important in strengthening skills in partner work, and required synergy between the author and graphic designer. This poster was designed using both Adobe Photoshop and Procreate software.
creating a contradiction
Piper's assignment was to design a graphic representation of opposites, or a contradiction using black and white. After being instructed to think abstractly, it was decided to ironically utilize the color wheel. Within the color wheel, blue and orange have a higher contrast than any other complimentary color combinations. This piece illustrates both of those colors in order to give the viewer a sense of color, without including any actual pigmentation. Items that elucidated both colors were digitally illustrated and placed on their respective sides of the poster. This poster was created with Adobe Photoshop and Procreate software.
Opposing Forces
Piper's assignment was to create and publish a graphic design collection, surrounding the topic of opposing forces. Themes were chosen based on the choices made in daily life. Everyday we choose how to execute our tasks, and how to present ourselves. Images of the cover, and sample pages are provided. This collection was designed, edited, and published using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Procreate software.
ICONOGRAPHY
Piper's assignment was to design a tabloid (11" X 17") size poster which included five primary icons belonging to a similar profession, as well as five secondary icons representing each person. One icon had to be a self portrait, which is centrally positioned on the poster. The simplicity of each icon design ensured that the small details did not go unnoticed. Piper chose to portray a diverse set of artistic influencers, which included Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Picasso, and Kara Walker. This assignment taught Piper to take a basic design and vary color, line, and shape to create recognizable icons. Some of the aforementioned details include Van Gogh's bandaged ear and Kahlo's unibrow. Represented in the clothing choices are neutral colors as well as shades of all the primary colors. Therefore, when choosing a background color, lavender was chosen so as not to clash with the existing design. The pixel-esque gridlines were created to be yellow because these two colors are complimentary. This piece was created using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Procreate software.
